bought (stole) a super clean 97 4x4 ext cab Ranger from a guy that said it just died and he couldnt figure it out. Turned out it was the cam syncro had exploded. anyway, long story short, got it running but has a knock and a miss. was thinking of putting a 4.0 in it instead of the 3.slow. What problems will i have, or will it just bolt up? The truck is way to clean to let go. Any advise is appreciated.

The 3.0 and the 4.0 have different bell-housing bolt patterns. You will need a new transmission as well. Along with computer and probably engine harness.

I figured it would be a little more involved than just bolting it in. Sounds like maybe a rebuild on the 3.0. Thanks

Yes, rebuild or replace the 3.0l Vulcan

One more quick question, what years would work? Found a 94 3.0 parts truck. Just not sure if the engine is the same. I know i would probobly have to change things over, like intake and such, but would the main parts, (block oil pan heads etc) work? Thanks again.

All 3.0 long blocks are interchangeable. It's a good idea to stick with 94 and newer so you get the roller cam setup. They did improve the block castings over time by adding bracing for increased strength and reduced NVH. Because of this, the 94 engine may not be the absolute best candidate, but it will work if you switch out the intake and exhaust manifolds.

1994 3.0l was also still using a distributor, so no Crank Position sensor attachment on the front cover or "fins" on the crank pulley.
Changing the pulley won't be hard, but adding the Crank Position sensor will be, probably need to change the timing chain cover

Thanks guys, good points brought up. Gonna see how cheap i can get it for, its worth the extra steps.
