i was wondering if there is a difference for the front rotors on a 96 ranger with dual piston calipers between the 4 wheel abs and the 2 wheel abs rotors is it just the tone ring in the back because the 4 wheel abs rotors are 150 and the 2 wheel abs rotors are 30 bucks and i am getting rid of the abs its a mud truck

so the only difference is the tone ring i called ford because no auto parts store had a clue if there was a difference ive been trying to find out if there was a difference in the rotors for 2 days now thanks for showing me that thread i have looked through pretty well all them now and that pretty well clarifys everything thanks :icon_cheers:

There 2 diffrent rotors for the 4x4 and its not abs, Its bearing size
I belive the dana 28 is small and I know for a fact the 35-35hybird are big bearing
4wheel abs is big and 2wheel is small.

I found out the hard way when I did sloted-cross drilled rotors on my 2wheel abs dana 35.

There is not a D28 in a 3rd gen ranger. The D28/35 hybrid uses everything the same as a regular d35 except the differential itself and the inner shafts.

I dident say there was there was a d28 in his truck, I said the d28 has a small bearing.

in a nut shell
2wheel abs = d28 small bearing
4wheel abs = d35, 35-28hybird big bearing

reguardless of what abs system you have.

Yes, the d28 has smaller wheel bearings, but the d28 rotors haven't been used sine 1989 when the D28 died in the ranger.

So there are both 2w abs rotors for the d35 and 4w abs rotors for the d35. One has the tone ring, the other does not. That is the only difference.

ask the guy at the counter to look at both rotors side by side. i was given the 2wabs rotors by accident a few years back and they did not fit correctly on my 4wabs axle. sure as hell wouldnt be the first time ive been wrong though.

ford parts have it right, but all other parts places cataloged them just like I said. Its stupid I know but its the way they did it.

and I think I know why, dana28 never had 4wheel abs so they logged it as 2wheel abs
and dana 35 & 35hybird had 4wheel abs as an option, to save on stocking space and cost they only make 1 rotor for the d35 & 35hy. 4wheel abs will work on a 2wheel abs but not the other way around.

I think thats why people have so many problems gitting the right rotors.
