Check engine light in 96 Ranger 5 spd, 2.0 quit working. I'm concerned about doing a lot of labor in vain. What must I do to verify that the bulb is in fact the problem? Thanks for any suggestions. BTW, if bulb is not the problem, what must be done next?

The light should come on when the ignition is turned on to prove out the light. The instrument cluster is easy to remove on a Ranger if you do need to replace the bulb.
