I have a 96 Ford Ranger XLT with 4.0L engine reporting code for P0305, sometimes P0306. Compression was low in the cylinder. Any ideas what should be checked/replaced first (cheapest to most expensive)???

It will code again after clearing if I drive it with clutch partially depressed and engine revved to 4000 rpm (its probably misfiring at high rpm).

any suggestions before I scrap it or get a rebuilt engine (BTW: what's that cost?)

Plugs, then wires if plugs don't help.
Last would be a coilpack.

Welcome to TRS!

from advanced auto
autolite plugs about $8
motorcraft wires $40

from autozone
cheaper coil pack I think was $70
