96 - Cylinder Head Install and Top Dead Center

Hey Everyone!

I just had my Cylinder Head rebuilt and was reading that I need to find TDC before reinstalling.

Previously I had the opposite Head rebuilt and didn't setup TDC before re-installing, which didn't seem to hurt anything, but I'm not sure....

So my question is do I really need to find TDC for cylinder 1 when re-installing a cylinder head?

You must get TDC before putting the belt on, and it's easier to do before you put the head on (not fighting cylinder pressure).

Thanks for the super fast response! I'm not doubting you here, because I really know nothing about well anything really.

But I'm getting told that I don't need to worry about it since my engine uses hydraulic lifters under the push rods, and since I didn't mess with anything to do with the timing wise I shouldn't need to find TDC...

Wow, I may have gotten myself in to deep on this repair. No idea. Yikes.

It sounds as if you only removed the cylinder head and did not remove the timing chain. In this case (since this is not an overhead cam engine) just put the cylinder head back on, and it'll all work out.
