Hello again,
Another day another new to me Ranger. I couldn't stop myself, I tried, I really did, but one look and I just had to buy this '96 XLT 4X4 ex cab.
A clean one owner with 74xxxk on the clock, and its loaded. Even has power windows, mirrors, and a 4.0 with an automatic.
The problem is second gear is not working. Seller stated that the trans went while climbing a hill that is maybe a 3 ~ 4% grade tops. He also stated that the trans had been acting up about 6 months earlier, and that the trans was serviced at that time which seemed as if it had helped.
I suspect that the truck was towed to the location where I bought it because the seller also said the truck would no longer move under its own power, and the truck had been sitting for 6 months.
I hooked up the scanner and started the truck thinking I'd pull the trans info only to find that this truck doesn't support this service. Figures.
I figured what the heck, may as well see what happens when it hits reverse, so I put it in reverse and it hooked up. Hmmm I'm now thinking this might be a simple fix, so then I put it in drive, and it hooked up hard. WT, is this guy on crack or what. I didn't say anything and I doubt he noticed what was happening. So I buy the truck, jump in; fired it up; and drove away.lol
I'm not sure, but when I looked in the mirror it looked as if the seller was holding his chest and was heading south.
Anyway, the trans does have a problem. It stays in first just fine, but can not find second when it shifts out. I only drove it a little ways, but I did find that when the truck was above 30mph the trans shifted from 1st into 3rd.
I'm hoping this isn't internal, as in clutch pack.
Any tips on what might cause 2nd gear to slip? Any sensors, or switches that need checking? Anyone ever have this, or heard of this happening?
Did I screw up... again? Maybe that sucker was holding his chest because he was laughing so hard he couldn't breath!
As always, any ideas tips and help are greatly appreciated.
