95 to 97 2.3 no start

i am stumped, i have a 95 ranger 2.3 that cracked the #3 cylinder i pulled it out (2nd time) put in a 97 2.3 everything bolted up ok all sensors fit, my problem is when i go to start it she will run for about 1-2 sec then shut off(clean no buck,miss,backfire,etc.)so i pulled codes 0340 keeps commin up even after i replaced it also checked it.5v and resistance is ok. also replaced crank. also checked iac also checked timing. if i give it 1/2 to full throtle it will want to run but with backfire in t/b also will flucuate i have checked vaccum seems ok switched intakes to the old ones still nothin any of you been here before is the comp realizing old values ? i am stumped use to rebuild old muscle cars but with sensors i throw out the old gas/air /spark therories any help would be great ...thanks Bob add : pulled plugs and they are black toooo much gas any ideas??????

would run your alternator is 14.4v and more.power to the pole of the battery out should always be higher than 12.8 volts an more

thanks, that was good, unfortunately I did replace cam and crank, still gettin code also it seems to be running very rich , in fact i beleve that is why it shuts off, plugs seem fouled. I am going at it again tomorrow any ideas would be great
