Just installed an '01 Sport Trac Dash in my '95 Ford Ranger 2.3l 5spd. It has a tach while my original dash did not.

Everything works correctly, properly, and accurately except for the Tach. It acts sluggishly and does not go above 2500 rpm.

Anybody know what would cause this? Where does it get its signal from? What could I troubleshoot or replace to possibly fix this?

Okay figured out the problem. Apparently the 4 cyl trucks do not have a ground for the tach but clusters from larger engines have and require this ground.

My vehicle does not have the ground but needs it on the proper wire of the instrument cluster wiring harness.

Anyone have a clue as to how I can figure this doozy out?

it could be the diffrence between the the v6 or v8 tach and the I4 tach cause i know on aftermarket tachs they have a switch to go to 4cyl, 6cyl or 8cyl. so the best i can say is go to an aftermarket unless someone has delt with it, i know people hav changed to sporttrac gauges and you should see what they have done.
