The '01 Explorer is SOHC, the Ranger is OHV. Dont waste your time with this swap.
What else do you want to hear?
Yes it can be done.
Is it a simple swap? NO, the 95 is a different engine.
Will the harness just plug in and work? I cant tell you. I dont know if the ranger switched over to EEC-V/OBDII for '95. I know they had to for '96.
Can I use the 01 computer to run the 95 engine? Yes and no. You can but its way to much work. You would have to completely rebuild the 01 harness to use the 95 electronics. Its not that bad of a job, but you have to know what you are doing. And you have to use the trans that matches the computer. (I'm running a '01 SOHC off a 95 OHV computer)
Are the fuel systems the same? No, the 95 is a return system, the 01 is returnless with a higher pressure regulator in the tank and no regulator on the fuel rails. If you find a 98+ OHV engine, it will have the right fuel rails to work with the 01 system.
Will the motor bolt in? Yes, the mounts from the 95 block will have to be replaced with the mounts from the 01 and it will bolt in.
Will the exhaust work? No, the Y-pipe is different from the OHV to the SOHC, and from the TTB to the IFS. You will have to cut up both Y-pipes and make one that works.
Will the 95 power steering hose work with the 01 rack? Nope, get one for a 98+ Ranger or 95+ Explorer with an OHV.
Will the rad and hoses from the 01 work with the 95 engine? Yes they will. The fan will also fit without modifying anything.
Will it ever pass inspection? Not in some places. Anywhere that plugs into the OBDII port will fail you. The vin in the 95 computer wont match the vin on the 01 truck. This may not mean much to you, but it might mean something if you move or try to sell the truck.
Is it worth the time and effort? Not in my opinion. You will have a truck that is , in all practicality, worthless. To sell it, you would have to find a sucker (which I dont like that idea). You would be swapping in a motor that has less power, The Explorer is already underpowered in my opinion. (This coming from someone who owns a Mustang Cobra and a T-bird Supercoupe!) It a lot easier to find a wrecked 4.0 SOHC mustang and get the engine from that.
