Hello all. my ranger has got me stumped. just got back from a roadtrip in hilly desert and the engine would seem to just lose power. i would be cruising along 75-80 mph (but it happens at any hiway speed), the motor will stumble ever so slightly and would lose enough power to force me to downshift just to maintain speed, even while going downhill. normally it could barely pull up the hills in 5th. after a while, it seems to go back to normal, and im making good speed again, only to have it happen again at some random point down the road. also, ive noticed that when taking off from a stop, as i accelerate, it seems to get a small boost in power. im not getting any codes. this is not a new problem, its happened as long as ive owned the truck, and who knows how long before that. most of the repairs listed below were attempts to fix this.
what i and have done;
intake baffle delete. new spark plugs. new plug wires. new air, fuel, oil filters. new injectors. new O2 sensors. new timing belt. new coil pack. cleaned the MAF. disconnected computer after every repair.
may or may not be related;
i used a scan tool with near real time data display and noticed that the jump in power during acceleration coincided with a rather large jump in timing advance (from 2 to 12 degrees). when cruising, the timing advance falls to 2-4 degrees (from about 23) while trying to maintain speed up a small hill(4th or 5th).
any advice would be greatly appreciated, its driving me bat-snot crazy, and i want to fix it before my next interstate trip.
