Hello,

My son's seat belt doesn't latch, so he's drivin' around unsafe. I've been looking around online for the latch part (mounts to the floor and comes up between the 60/40 split seat). The only site I found is an OEM site (fordparts.com) that identifies the part as number 61203 and costs $276. Most of the other sites I've found don't even have seat belt parts and I'm trying to avoid the stealership.

My question is, does anyone know of a good site that might have this part where it might not cost so much? Thanks,

scrap yard?

^ look here...

Takes about an hour to remove if you have to pull the seats...requires a few torx sockets...number 50 I believe and maybe a smaller one...total cost for those is about $20...bring a set of them if you can and your ratchet and sockets...probably need a 13mm or imperial equivalent and an extension or two...

You can buy a pretty good set of basic tools for $300 so save your money from the OEM stuff and get JYDIY brand...junk yard do it yourself...

Agree with Martin and Mark. Junk yard and a little bit of free time :)

every DIY repair I have done I have saved money on, and that is even if I had to buy special tools to do it.

Make sure the truck didn't take a hard hit, it may be compromised if your son REALLY needs to use it.

When searching for them for my first Ranger I found quite a few that were frayed from rubbing on the seat...I don't like the ones that pass through a seat from the floorboards...they are pretty strong but why take a chance...

I'd actually be more concerned with the floor panels where the bolts secure them to the vehicle...found way too many where the bolt holes didn't look like they'd hold anything...my 96 was sold to me for this very reason...the original owner went to put it on one day and he pulled the whole base section up...

I was thinking about the moving internal parts of the buckle.

You can find some on ebay, but a lot of places won't sell seat belt parts from junked vehicles because of liability issues. Especially parts from the driver's seat. If a vehicle is wrecked, 99% of the time someone was sitting in the driver's seat when it happened, and collision forces put a lot of stress on the seat belt parts. No guaranteeing they won't fail if it happens a second time. When it comes to accidents, they are like airbags: one use only.

The price tag sounds high even for OEM, though. $276 sounds more like the three-point belt and tensioner assembly. It doesn't hurt to call the dealer ask how much it would cost. This is one part I think you're better off getting new.

Does ford offer life time seat belt replacement like Honda?

Apparently you can buy the latch separately. This guy made a blog post about how he went about replacing it in his 1997. Thought you might find it useful:

I was able to find the part on parts.com, but the part number and price varies depending on the color of the belt and whether you have full bench, split bench or bucket seats. Name of the part is "buckle end" and the lowest is around $125, highest $215. It's still a lot, but a lot less that the hospital bills if he gets in a wreck.
