i have a 95 explorer sport for about a year now and only driven it about 6000 miles. it has a 4.0 and automatic transmission. the odometer is about 131k miles, and now it needs a new transmission, is it common/uncommon for the transmisson to go out at that many miles?

I'd call that "common".

Look through a few city's Craigslist listings for Explorers with the price set at <$1000.

You'll find dozens with bad trannys.

Problem with autos is that instead of having one clutch that is worn out at around 100K they have dozens that wear out a little closer to 150K. Yeah, its pretty common, but if you fix it you can have a vehicle that will last you another 20 years easy.
