For starters this thing has definitely been used. It has 250k+ miles on it but I want to fix it since it’s a 2.3 and also 4x4.
I bought it in the condition that it’s in, non running etc….
So what I know is that it’s not getting any spark, nor is it getting fuel pressure, and also the CEL is not working.
What I have done, … checked the bulb in the gage cluster, and swapped the pcm with another known to be good pcm from a 1997 ranger with the same configuration. Also I have checked fuses, relays, etc…. Still the same thing, no start. Will crank all day and it sounds like it’s got good compression (haven’t tested) and the timing belt is intact and not loose at all…. I’ve never dealt with these engines before so any suggestions are much appreciated!

Figure out why it doesn't have spark, then check if the pump is running, then if the injectors are firing

Pump is not running, I did confirm that. I will be installing a crank sensor, but I have my doubts. With the CEL not working, that’s where my concern lies… or am I missing something? Lol

Figure out why the pump isn't running first. The fuel pump doesn't care about a crank sensor signal.

Sounds good. I’ll go over the same things I did yesterday… maybe I missed something. ?

Ignition on, check for power and ground at the pump. Might only have 12v for a few seconds while it tries to prime the pump, should be constant while cranking. If that's good then try powering the pump directly

If you don't have spark or fuel pump it sounds like the ignition isn't turning on, I would check the key on power in some places, I think there's a keyed power on the OBD II port or disconnect the ECM and check on the pin there, either that or there's a bad ground somewhere... any bad fuses in the power distribution box?

Ended up being fuse number 19 (I believe) wasn’t getting good enough connection. That and a slew of other “custom” wiring the previous owner did. After it was all said and done it boiled down to one fuse in the side of the dash. Put it all back together and even put on some square mirrors too. R/R brake cylinder blew and now it’s pinched off till I have time to deal with it (only used as a “ranch” truck for now)
The rear part of the frame was bent a little to where the bumper was pushed up so I heated it up and straightened it out best I can and now I can open the tailgate all the way.
The last thing I have to do is find U-bolts for it because for some reason I missed the fact that the spring plates and u-bolts were loose as can be! So I may swap out the rear end and get new plates and bolts for peace of mind. Other than that I love this stupid little thing. It’s a lot of fun!

Can’t believe I didn’t post pics of the little beast! Here she is in all her glory! Lol

So I casually started looking at the front end on this truck and let’s just say I’m glad I did.
The front driveshaft is about to fall apart, the ball joints have a ton of play, I snapped the shock stud off the radius arm, the u-joints in all the axle shafts are completely thrashed, the radius arm bushings are thrashed, the bearings were loose and howling, the rear u-bolts were barely hanging on, all 4 shocks were leaking and bad, picked up a nail in 2 tires, front diff has definitely seen batter days… and the list goes on.
I happened to have a 1997 Mazda b4000 parts donor so my day consisted of swapping out the whole TTB with new radius arm bushings, wheel bearings, mile marker hubs and hardware, new (to me) tires, new/used spring plates and u-bolts for the rear, new shocks, and on Friday I’m doing a dual core radiator, and the timing belt, water pump and seals etc….
Also completely re did the front clip as well and painted the radiator support….

This truck has kicked my butt for the last few days but it’s coming along.

trucks looking great.

i would like a 2.3, 5 speed, 4x4. not that i need 4x4, i just like having it in case a zombie outbreak or some country attacks us on our own grounds and we have to do the red dawn thing and hide in the hills for a while.

nearest i have found is an 85 single cab, long bed, 4 cylinder and five speed with 4x4 but its already got rust along the top of hte windshield and i live to close to the ocean to deal with that crap

Thanks man. I’ve had fun making it a “better” truck lol timing kit is happening this weekend then I’ll be driving it.
The 85’s are nice but I personally prefer the 93 and newer body better. Easier to find parts for etc… Up where I’m at I absolutely need 4x4 so it’ll be nice to have 4x4 and decent gas mileage for once. I’m use to driving my 98 ranger on 33’s with a 302… talk about horrible mileage!

I bet it gets 19-20 once you get it going and driving... that's all my '90 would do when it was stockish, now it gets 15-16... but so does a V8 Explorer...
