I have a problem with my Ranger where it will stall at idle. It isn't consistent though. Sometimes I'll have to sit for 2 to 10 minutes and it will then stall, or it will just stall when I let off the gas. And it appears to happen more frequently when it is cold outside.

First off, it's a 1995 Ford Ranger STX 4x4, Ext. Cab., 4.0L with Auto Trans. At first, my problem was that I couldn't get the truck to start without putting my foot on the gas peddle. I scanned it for error codes and had one for the EGR Valve. I replaced that and the starting issue was fixed, but then came the stalling problem.

I then replaced the Mass Air Flow Sensor because it appeared to have a burned element and it was dirty, but that did not solve the issue. So I brought it to the Ford dealer and they just replaced the IAC, but that didn't fix it (man am I pissed about that waste of $). My next idea is to replace the Throttle Position Sensor. There are no error codes whatsoever. If that doesn't work, I'm fresh out of ideas.

Those motors are usually the IAC are there any new codes in it? Tap the new IAC and see if that helps you may have got a bad one

There are no error codes and the IAC was just replaced, using the $125 part from Ford.

Don't just replace parts for the hell of it.

Is there excessive carbon build up? Take the intake tube off and look around the openings on the throotle body. If there is alot of build up then get it cleaned. Be sure to take the TB off so you don't have chunks falling down into the engine. The carbon can clog up the passage that the IAC uses to meter air into the engine at idle. Therefore replacing the IAC motor wouldn't do shit. If this turns out to be the case I'd take the truck back to the dealership and have them refund you for fixing and charging you for a part you did NOT need. Be sure to take proof, or even have them clean it themselves.

The TPS is mosty just the driver's direct input into the PCM. Such as when passing....it instantly increses the injector pulses, rather than waiting for the HO2S's to get there input back to the PCM, etc, etc. This would cause a terrible lag.

I'll check that out when I get a chance. I was skeptical when the dealer said all they had to do was replace the IAC. I figured if that was the problem, then I would have some kind of error code, which is why I didn't replace it myself. That's what I get for assuming that paying someone with more knowledge than I have would be worth it. Like anything else these days, you get better service by doing it yourself for free.

I just called the dealer. It's going back tonight.

Sent it back to the dealer last night. They have no idea what the problem is. They say they have a call into Ford for help on the problem and will update me tomorrow.

I had the same problem last year in the winter. Started it up and the rpms started to go up and down or it would just stall on me. So my first guess was well it's a 94 so lets go out and get a ton of injecter cleaner and try that some. Well about $20 later in injecter cleaner and a couple tanks of gas later it's just as good as it was always. I also pulled the intake and cleaned it up really good with some type of cleaner. (carb cleaner??)

The problem has gone away for the whole summer and i think it might be back alittle. but then again i did not use any injecter cleaner this whole year....

Also hows your plugs and wires look ??

The plugs could probably use a change. If they can't fix it, I guess that'll be my point of attack, new plugs, wires and a thorough cleaning.

Just got a call from the dealer and here's what we have. What's causing the stalling is that there is an air leak. So they are going to replace all of the intake gaskets and the EGR gaskets. On top of that, the ECT and DPFE sensors are shot, so those are getting replaced.

That's gonna be fun to pay for.
