What type of transmission fluid is needed for a 1995 2.3L Ford Ranger thats 2wd and equipped with a 5spd manual transmission? Along with how many quarts?

pick up 3 quarts of mercon ATF

Specified capacity is 2.75 quarts.

So you'll have a little left over.

Dextron III/Mercon fluid (it's commonly called "Dex/Merc" or "Domestic Vehicle ATF" nowadays. Look at the bottle label, it should say meets Mercon requirements). Don't get Mercon V whatever you do, it's not the same stuff in spite of some claims that it replaces Mercon.

Valvoline and Castrol are both good.

I know this thread is pretty old but how many quarts does an Auto transmission for the 2.3L '96 ranger need?

If you're dropping the pan and changing the filter, about 4 quarts. Total capacity is around 10 quarts.
