I have a 1994 2wd Ford Ranger XLT and it won't start. Last time I drove it I heard a slight buzzing sound when I would press on the gas pedal (Almost as it something was rubbing under the hood). When I lifted the hood, it smelled like burn't rubber. I checked the pulleys, belt, fan, ect... and saw nothing that would have rubbed. Now all that happens when I turn the ignition is a click. Power on the dash board is good,, battery is good, it just won't turn over,, just a click sound. Any ideas?

My first thought is a bad starter, but I have no idea about burnt rubber.

Have you checked the starter solenoid? (on the driver side fender closish to the battery) or the starter relay? (right beside the solenoid, in the power box). Not sure about the burnt rubber... could be a pulley or something seized and that was your belt?

Sounds like a starter problem. Get under it and beat it with a wrench, rock, tire iron or whatever a few times and it should start up. Mine did the same exact thing about 6 months ago and i just beat it into submission. Haven't replaced it yet and has acted up a few times since then...but I've just had to show it who's boss.

If all your connections are good and you know the battery has a full charge, then I'd do what whitelightning said and tap on the starter. My F-250 did that before I replaced it. Sometimes it would start right up, and other times I'd have to hit it a few times with a hammer.

I agree sounds like starter, however could be the solenoid. I have found that any and all vehicles over ten years old should have a hammer. Purposes of hammers are endless unstick a starter, bypass a bad solenoid, tweeker beater, had a car that you had to beat on the block with a hammer to get it to start ( never could figure out why but worked every time), and many more uses

check your negative battery cable, any kind of corrosion will screw up the ground strength. if all else fails, follow the examples above, hit the starter
