Having to replace the transmission on my 94 ranger. Of course it is the M50D-R1. My question is...if I find a newer M50D-R1HD that was placed in the rangers after 1997, will this have the same bolt patterns as the one that proceeded it? If not, what will it take to get it to work with the older 4.0 cyl engine?

First off, the M50D-R1HD was not installed in Rangers until 2000 when Ford started putting the 4.0 SOHC in the Rangers.

The M50D-R1HD will bolt up to any older 4.0 OHV. I have installed a M50D-R1HD on a 4.0 OHV. People will argue with you and say they won't, but I am speaking from personal experience.

Everything I had been able to find showed a change in 1997, but thanks for the correction.

In reference to the bolting up, I have seen some info about the difference in the flywheel/pressure plate set up. Is there anything different needed there, or is it just a straight change out?

Thanks again for the info.

You will be able to use the flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, and slave cylinder for your year truck. I would recommend changing the clutch, pressure plate, and slave cylinder before installing the "new" transmission.

IIRC you can put the R1HD inplace of the regular R1, but not the other way around?

You can put the M50D-R1 on a 4.0 SOHC, but itisnt advisable because the internals on the R1HD is beefed up for the SOHC.

Hmm thought there was something about alignment dowels not lining up, or a couple bolt holes that didn't??

The alignment dowels line up but there would be 1 bolt hole that didn't. That is the same with the R1HD on the OHV.

So the consensus on this topics is that:

1. A M5OD-R1 (from a OHV 4.0L) will bolt up to a SOHC 4.0L (minus one bolt)
2. A M5OD-R1HD (from a SOHC 4.0L) will bolt up to a OHV 4.0L (minus one bolt)
3. Use whatever flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, and slave cylinder fits the engine

Can anyone add anything to this?

I am trying to figure out what trans will work with my SOHC 4.0L. I would like to use a M5OD-R1 trans because I have a manual t-case and most of the R1HD trans do not have the bosses for the shifter, plus it is easier to find a R1 trans.

thanks.
