'94 ranger 4.0 misfire.

I have a 1994 ford ranger 4x4 with the 4.0 and the 5spd. it started to miss when cold, I replaced the plugs and wires, no difference, air filter is clean, just did a compression check - all good, don't really know where to go next, never done too much work on an efi engine.

it is a very even miss and seems to be present throughout throttle range. (all at no load, i stopped driving it when it started to miss)


my next steps:
check for a dirty maf?
check for a dirty throttle body?

other than that i have no idea


also, the exhaust smells very gassy, so the missing cylinder(s) is getting gas.


any thoughts would be appreciated.

Wow, I feel like an idiot, here's what it was.

the misfiring before WAS the plug wires or plugs, the misfiring after i switched those was because i took a quick look at the plug wires as i took them off and thought the coil pack was 1-2-3-4-5-6 not 1-2-3-4-6-5. switch-o-change-o, truck runs great.

Can't believe i did that. doh!

I almost made the same mistake. Then I thought to myself; I better make sure they really did engineer it that way.....

lol yeh there have been a couple of times I have looked at the coil pack and gone, hmm? I wonder if thats how it should be. I have drawn it out in my owners manual, my shop manual, & my haynes manual...
