O.K. , so I go to the Tech section and look for the owners manual for my 94 Ranger Splash. I find that we have every owners manual from 95 to 2019. Where are the pre-95 owners manuals? The 94 and 95 are not the same at all.

you used to be able to get them off of the Ford site, but they only went back to 96 or 97... and that was 5 or 6 years ago. I would hit the salvage yards and see if you can get any there.

AJ

Thanks. I figured someone would have posted a pdf of them somewhere. The Ford site only goes back to 96 (as you mentioned).

If you have a specific question that might be answered in the 93 manual, let me know and I'll look it up or scan a few pages for you. I don't really feel like scanning the whole thing, though.

Thanks. I will try to pick up a copy somewhere.
My question right now is how to turn on the cargo lights.

E-Bay, punch up 1994 Ford Ranger Owners Manual.
Dozens of complete sets, including pouch, from as low as 10 bucks depending on condition.

Thanks. I will try to pick up a copy somewhere.
My question right now is how to turn on the cargo lights.
while this might be different for you because your dash is different, to turn on the cargo light in my 97, I just turn on the interior lights via the switch on the dash (not the one on the interior light itself) this same switch also controls the brightness of the instrument panel. turn it full bright and then more until it clicks and the dome light comes on. your cargo light should be on now as well.

AJ

Yea, that's the problem. I think the 94 is the last model without a separate switch for the cargo lights. The dim of the dash lights is a twist of the pull/push switch for the headlights.

my 97 does not have a separate switch for the cargo, it is tied to the dimmer switch for the dash lights, but there is a position to turn on the dome light. that is what turns on the cargo light. look for that switch on your dash... pretty much every car that I have owned has a way to turn on the dome light via the headlight switch cluster.

if it truly does not have that feature (Ford has done some weird things...) try the switch on the actual dome light and see if that turns it on. also being 26 years old, you might check to see if the bulbs themselves are not burned out.

AJ

If there's no separate switch, you should be able to turn on the dome and cargo lights by rotating the headlight switch. From full bright on the dash lights, it should click one more position.

Yes, if you rotate the headlight switch to the left (counter clockwise) it comes to a semi-stop point and then will click further. Dash lights are full bright at that point. This does not turn on the cargo light - at least in my truck. The third brake light does work, the bulbs are new and there is power to the unit. Changing the position of the dome light switch (on the dome light itself) does nothing to effect any of this.

Does the headlight switch turn on the dome light? The only ways I know of to turn on the cargo light is the headlight switch or opening the door.

The bulbs for the third brake light are separate from the bulbs for the cargo light. As several have said, turning the headlight switch until it clicks is what should turn the dome light and cargo light on.

If it does not, then the bulbs are bad or you have a wiring problem. I can post the electrical diagram for the circuit later this evening.

Here you go...

Thanks. I guess I have some sort of wiring problem. The dome light does not come on when the dim/bright headlight switch it turned all the way to the left. I was going to deal with that later but maybe it's all the same problem. I'll have to look at the diagram and see if I can wire around the dome light. That will at least tell me if the cargo lights are working. Thank you for the pics. That should get me going in the right direction.
