94 OHV 4.0l tick on warm up

when i start my truck if its not already warm it has a really bad tick to it. it will be loud then go soft and it does it till its warmed up. and gets faster with more throttle. anybody got any ideas?

usually that is either a lifter w acking or a rocker arm.If its a light tick its probably a lifter and not something you want to get into just dont hot rod it.If the tick is a little more solid it could be the rocker arm and it could be checked for its torc just dont over torc them or you wll open a can of worms

Does the noise vary with engine load? When you put it in gear (automatic transmission), does it get louder? If manual, if you let the clutch grab a bit at idle in gear, does the noise get louder then?

If it's in the valvetrain, usually they wear at the pushrod to rocker arm socket. Since the rockers on the 4.0L are not adjustable, the only way to fix it is new parts. Fortunately you only need to take the valve covers off to do that.

well see i thought it was a lifter too. doesnt get louder with load. its a manual. but it does get faster and louder with engine speed.

Probably a pushrod / rocker arm then. Lifters on 4.0's typically don't start ticking like they do on 2.9's.

Pull the valve covers, rocker arm assembly, and inspect. Oh, and keep everything in order!
