94 Explorer 44 trouble?

In the eplorers do you have to ut it in nuetral to engage then put in reverse? i got the truck thinking the 4wd didnt work, i tried it and then put it in reverse and it works fine? Is there something wrong or is that what it takes to get it in 4wd... And also are they good to go muddin hill climbinb ect?
