My neighbor has a '94 Ranger with the 2.3 four cylinder that will only stay on for a few seconds after starting. He says it has an older style OBD plug that won't fit modern OBD scanners so he can't diagnose the issue. Can anyone help with that? TIA, Bill

Something simple you can try is to squirt some ether in it and see if it will run on that after it stops and won't start. If that helps it, it's a fuel supply problem. If it doesn't make any difference, than more than likely it's a spark problem.

P.S. Does his truck scanner connection reside under the hood? If so, he can buy one of these to read the codes.

I honestly am not sure where the scanner plug is located. The owner says it's not under the dash like newer vehicles.

It's under the hood by the power distribution box but you don't need one of those scanners, you can get the same info for free... Go to the link below and follow the analog volt meter method but just make the jumper that's marked in there then jump in the drivers seat and watch the check engine light flash, it'll be 3 digit codes, there's a link in there to the descriptions of the codes.

I'll try that thanks!
