I recently bought this pickup and intend on an engine swap but thought it would be nice to drive it until I have the time and money. I'm not sure about the history of the vehicle but I know a local shop spent lots of time trying to figure this out. Any time it is 45ish or below it won't start. It cranks but sounds like is out of time. When it does start it runs fine so I'm assuming its not a timing issue. I did a search but didn't find the answer I was looking for. Thank you all for your time.

Depending on where you are, you may want to consider a block heater...or one in-line with the lower rad hose...I found one for $50 and after warming it up my carbed 2.3 starts first time pretty much every time...last winter it hit -25 a few times and after two hours of warm-up with the block heater it would start right away...

Nice thing is...the heater only takes a minute or so to start heating the cab...down side is that you have to park fairly close to an electrical outlet...and carry an extension cord with you if you plan on staying over night somewhere...not to mention the down time of having to wait before starting your truck to go somewhere...but a bit of planning goes a long way...

Temperature effects coils of wires. It is possible that cold, rather than heat is effecting some. One would be the crank sensor. I'd hate to buy one just for the heck of it, but I would like to see if it would help you.

Thank you both for the response, after some research on identifix I think I may have it fixed. There was a ground bolt on the ignition module missing. It has started three mornings in a row now. Although it has not been as cold, the previous owner told me it would not have started those mornings when he owned it. Thanks again.
