94 5 speed trans leak.

First post here. i have a 94 ranger 5 speed with 280k that has a pretty good leak and it looks like it comes from where the tail shaft meets the trans. Cani just pull the tail shaft off and reseal it or is there more to. Im not looking to do a lot of work to this tran as it is pretty worn out but i would like to fix the leak. thanks for the help

Are you sure it's not coming from the shift rail plugs? These are the most common source of leaks. (thanks Nathan for the pic)

I didnt know there where plugs up there, i just looked and i bet that is where my leak is. what is the best way to fix this.

Some people silicone the old plugs back in. In my opinion, putting a freeze plug in them is your best bet. That's what my Explorer had, and it never leaked again.

Freeze plugs are what I put in my tranny. But I had it out and rebuilt it. I dont know if you can get to them with it still in the truck. I guess it could be possible to pull the boot back and maybe pull the carpet and the plate on the hump off and do it. I dont know, never tried it that way. Almost a guarentee that those suckers are leaking. Two of mine were missing when I pulled my tranny out. Thats been 2 years ago and not a hint of a leak on it since. (Thank goodness) One of my pet peeves...oil leaks.. cant stand them..

Thanks for the help. I Pulled the plugs and sealed them with some rtv and the leak is gone.
