My 1994 ranger 4.0l V6 2wd engine is having trouble and I don't know what the problem is. When the MAF sensor is plugged in, it sucks gas like no other. The current MAF sensor was just put on the engine a few days ago, it's remanufactured. The one that was on there before had gone bad, but the only difference it made was that it stopped the severe jumping that the engine did when riding down the road, sputting sound from the exhaust pipe, and thick black smoke from the exhaust pipe. Also, with the old and new MAF sensor, there's a weird smell that's emitted from the engine.
To fix the issue I just unplugged the MAF sensor, and the engine runs fine and gives me normal MPG. Although, after the engine gets hot, it has a rough time starting, if it starts at all, and the idle is faint after being stopped and then started after sitting for a minute. Once I get it going though, the truck will also occasionally stall out while in neutral as I approach a stop light, or stall out when starting off from a stop.
Note: The guy that owned the truck before I did switched the old MAF sensor, and air filter box connected to the cylinder with that of a different year Ford Ranger. The MAF sensor for a 94 ranger wouldn't fit onto the air filter box, so I had to remove the core from the cylinder and put it onto the cylinder from the different ranger. No telling what else he did to the truck
But I really need some help.
