I'm rebuilding a 94 4.0. The timing chain sprocket on the crank is seated behind a keyway on the crankshaft and there is no keyway slot in the sprocket for it to slide off the shaft. My question is; does the keyway in the shaft come off in order for the sprocket to slide off? I have never came across this problem before.

I went through the first 4 pages of the 4.0 threads and didn't find anything on this specific question. I appreciate any info anyone could provide with experiencing this. Thanks

Sounds like the key for the Harmonic balancer is still in the key way of the crankshaft.
It might take a little persuasion to remove, a small flat head screwdriver & a tap with a hammer will do.

Hope this is a good enough picture.

I spent a solid 45 mins with a small chisel screwdriver and hammer, that's what got me to ask the question. I appreciate your reply on that's what is suppose to come out though. Thankyou
