Hello Everybody
I have a 94 Explorer with the 4.0, I just rolled 160k. As of right now I am getting about 13mpg :(...I have 7" of lift with 31's and it has 3.73 gears, Also have 2.5" dual exhaust..My question is should I really be getting this bad of mileage with 31s or could something else be the issue?. I had a diagnostic test done on it about a year ago when i first got it(check engine light was on)..the only thing that came up then was EGR..The ford dealership said that it was the sensor on the intake plenum that has the two rubber hoses that connect to the exhaust manifold. Would this sensor give the computer a bad enough read out to alter my mileage?..The engine has great oil pressure and is very quiet and still gets up and goes...Plugs and fuel filter were also changed this past fall. Im thinking it may be multiple things...that sensor, fuel injectors (wouldnt i be able to notice this though?) loss in compression?.. Its not a big deal I would just like to be up around 18-20mpg...Any advice or input would be great!
Thanks Alot
Nick

I was pulling in a lot of gas with my 97 until the EGR sensor was replaced as well as a new intake a gasket. The computer will tell the engine to use more gas when there is a gas leak to prevent overheating.

Dude, your Explorer should be getting waaaay better than that. I too have a 94 except mine is running 33's on 3.73:1 gear with a six inch lift and it's getting 15mpg hwy. Only difference I can see is the dual exhaust... but I don't think it would cause THAT much of an issue. Are you sure your OD is working??? (at 60mph it should be about 1800 rpm... give or take a few either way)

Yea the OD works great...check this out.. :) This redneck fix was like this when I got it...

Ya may try a good cleaning to the intake / injectors etc... A really thorough tune up won't hurt if it hasn't been done in a while too. I don't have a lift on mine nor big tires but my engine isn't really "stock" anymore and I get combined just a hair under 20mpg.
