94 2.3L Engine Diagnosis Question HELP

Hey, newbie here. Quick question.

94 2.3l 5spd. 134k

Was running a little bit rough and having trouble starting after driving and shut off... anyway I replaced both coil packs and plugs. Runs a bit better, starts up a little better as well. However when I start it up and take off it misfires a bit and runs rough until i get into 3rd or 4th gear. I assume this is probably a fuel delivery probelm? The fuel filter probably hasnt been changed in several years. Could this most likely be the issue? I just hate going to the stealership and being told several different things. They said I need a new EGR VALVE and DPFE, I dont think this would cause the problem and I always thought EGR or DPFE it was one or the other? Any help would be great?

Prime the fuel system before each start, see if it improves.

Turn key to Run, do not crank the starter.
Fuel pump "primes" for 2-3 sec.

Turn Key to Off.
Repeat 2 or 3 times. Experience will tell you how many times you need to do this.

THEN crank the starter over and see if that improves the sputtering.


If it does improve it, you could have a bad fuel filter, a leaking fuel injector, or most likely a bad fuel pump (the fuel pump has a check valve that is supposed to keep the pressure up).

If there is a fuel smell to your oil, suspect an injector.
Reading the spark plugs should tell you which cylinder's injector is seeping.
