I have a A4LD. Can anyone point me in the direction of a stout rebuild kit that can handle some abuse. Or is there a stronger transmission that I can swap in that is compatible with the 4.0l that's in it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Good read here on that trans: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/a4ld.shtml

Blog I saw said this:
"The A4LD could really benefit from better friction material. Upgrade bands and clutches are available for this transmission and should be included in any performance rebuilt. I recommend looking for the “blue” clutches made by Raybestos. More sever duty clutches are available but they are not well suited for street use.

I would also consider modifying the valve body with a performance oriented shift kit. Shift kits help the transmission by increasing the transmissions line pressure. This in turn provided more holding power to the clutches and bands and helps prevent them from slipping. A shift kit will also firm up the shifts and reduce the overall time it takes for the clutches to fully apply."

Thanks for the info. Will check on suggested parts. Will a 4r55e or any other trans match up to my 4.0l?

Automatics have a integrated bell housing(one piece housing), so the bolt holes to attach trans to engine block are specific to the engine model.
i.e. so an automatic from a Ranger with a 2.3l or 3.0l won't bolt to a 4.0l block, and a 3.0l trans won't bolt to a 2.3l or 4.0l block, ect.....
2.9l and 4.0l shared the same block bolt pattern, so trans from either will bolt to the other, always exceptions to the rules :)

And in the case of 2WD or 4x4 the tail shaft will be different, so you will need a trans to match your vehicles engine model and 2wd or 4wd type.

There is also drive shaft length to consider, transmissions length can change
