Just seeing if anyone knows which motors will just drop in. If any besides the same 2.3l. What years ask will Mount up with original hardware? My cylinder 4 only reads 55lbs with compression test.
As far as motor mounts and transmission, any 2.3 or 2.5 will drop in there...might have some issues mating the 2.3 hardware with the later 2.3s after 95...just from what I've read...
As per usual...if I'm wrong someone will correct me...
I am wanting to stay with a 4 cylinder. I was just wondering mainly if the newer design of the 2.3 or equivalent would mate with the existing hardware, tranny, ect.
You can bolt up a 2.5L block and injectors and put on your old style crank sensor (will probably require drilling/tapping 3 holes), and stick with your stock computer and everything, but like Mark said the accessories will probably mount differently on the new block.
If you want quicker results, get your cylinder head and valves serviced. Odds are that you have valve problems which are relatively easy to repair. Save a bunch of bucks also.
You can get a re-man head for a lot less than an engine (in most cases), and it can be installed without pulling the engine with all that entails.
Unless you are set on replacing the whole thing, I'd check prices on head work and a valve-grind gasket set.

I was going to try and find someone with a scope to look in the spark plug hole to see what the piston and cylinder look like before ordering parts. That'd be great news to just need a new head
