Hey guys, I have been scouring the site for information but haven't had any success. Here is my problem:

I have a 93 Ranger 2.3l. My water pump went out and I replaced it. However, when I installed the new pump the gasket slid off of the upper portion. I let the engine idle for about 15 minutes and everything was fine, no leaks. I drove the truck down the street about 1/8 mile and I noticed the steam leaking out from the improper placement of the gasket. At the same time, the engine began to stall.

I promptly fixed the gasket, but my truck still will not rev above 1100-1300 rpm. Basically it will idle fine, but cuts out whenever i give it any gas.

After reading up on this website I decided to try replacing the coils (both of them) and the ignition control module. This did not help and I dont wanna throw parts at it until its fixed. So I figured it might be worth asking if there are any sensors above the water pump that may have went bad (because the steam was coming up directly above the pump).

Could it be the crank sensor?

Well, I think you botched the timing belt alignment.

Do you mean when I installed the pump I fudged up the timing? Or could this have been caused by the steam? I want to believe the steam (or myself changing the pump) caused the problem, but I understand it could possibly be something unrelated.

and thanks a bunch for your reply.

Sounds like you may have knocked off a vacuum line somewhere...check the PCV valve...not sure what others you may have, but that would be something to look at...it is not even close to the water pump...on the driver side around the intake near the front of the engine...

You can check the valve timing via the inspection hole but i doubt that's the problem.

So from what you said the limited RPM was first noticed on your 1/8 mile trip down the road?
Not after the second time fixing the water pump gasket?

I would agree with Mark_88, something was disconnected on the first disassembly and was not hooked back up.

Not the CPS(crank sensor), engine wouldn't start.
Probably not a vacuum leak because that would effect idle more, but I would still check each vacuum line.
The TPS(throttle position sensor) on the intake might be unplugged, I would check that, it tells the computer to give the engine more gas when your foot pushes down the pedal.

what about a clogged catalytic converter? Those will stop a engine from being able to REV.

I'd say to check your oil level.

If there's any kind of indication of water in your oil, you could have a blown head gastket. I looked into my Haynes manual, and a blown head gasket could be the cause of your problem. The other thing to check is your ignition components. The water could have corroded something, causing it to short out.

Lastly, check your fuel filter and/or your fuel pressure regulator. Also, I'd recommend running some SeaFoam through the motor to clean it out.

Thanks for the input.

I do not see any indication of a blown head gasket. I will check the connections and FPR now.

again thanks for your help.

Would unplugging sensors while it is running help pin point a problem? I mean if I unplug the TPS and there is no change, would it indicate it could be the cause of the problem?

I also just changed the TPS, which was a major pain in the butt. Although it did not help.
