Will a 4x4 M5ODR1 from a 3.0L '00 Ranger bolt up to a 4x4 '93 Ranger with the 3.0L directly? Are there any compatibility issues at all in swapping between these years? Shifter location and whatnot? I feel certain it will no problem, but just want to be sure. I know there are plenty of people out there that know the answer for sure...

They should bolt up no problem. Only thing I don't know is if there is a neutral sensor switch on one and not the other, or if both have it (or don't have it).

Since the '93 is a 4x4, you don't need to worry about the later truck having the electronic speedometer, as the '93 speedo is hooked into the transfer case, not the trans.

The later M5ODs use a different shifter handle, so be sure to get that with it.

The only neutral safety switch on my truck (the 2000 Ranger) is the clutch pedal. The only electrical connector on the transmission is the plug for the reverse lights.

I'm selling the transmission to a guy with a '93 ranger and he was wanting to make sure it would work. I have my old shifter, so I can give him that as well. As long as his current transmission doesn't have a neutral safety switch on it it should be good to swap.

I wasn't referring to the neutral safety switch, I'm speaking of the neutral sensor on the side of the trans that tells the PCM whether the trans is in neutral or not (I think it's an idle emissions control or something).

As far as I know, it's not a critical component, but now that I look in my '94 books (which '93 is likely the same), I see it's a 4.0L-only part, so you (the guy you're selling it to) should be good.

If not, the top plate/ shift rail assemblies can be swapped.

Either way, it'll work for him.

Yeah I'm not sure why the 4.0's have a neutral sensor on the tranny and the 3.0's don't. Even the M5R2 my truck has in it now behind my 5.0 only has a plug for the reverse lamps, so the only way the pcm knows it's in neutral is when the clutch pedal is in. The tranny came out of a 2000 F-150 with a 4.2L V6. Maybe the newer model years have the neutral sensor on the trans for emissions purposes??? I dunno.... Just speculating.... In any case the transmission will work for him. Discussion closed.

Doesn't the 1354e require a neutral signal to shift...?
Can't remember, been to many years since my manual swap.

No, mine would shift while moving unless I was shifting into 4 low, then it had to be sitting still I think. I don't think it had to be in neutral though. I could consult my owner's manual to be sure... There is no neutral sensor anywhere on the transmission. Unless it somehow gets this signal from the transfer case electrical connector....

According to my owner's manual, to shift into 4x4 low the truck has to be stopped and the clutch pedal has to be depressed. Shifting into 4X4 high can be done while moving. The clutch pedal is the only neutral sensor on my truck.

Yep, this signal comes from the clutch pedal being depressed (I frequently shifted my BII's old 1350E case to 4-lo & back with the trans in gear but with the clutch in)

Hmmm, anyone have access to a wiring diagram to see where the circuit goes?

Looking at my diagrams, it's a red w/lt-blue stripe wire within the control module harness where it plugs in under the dash, though trying to figure out where it ultimately goes from there my eyes went bleary, so I'm not sure if this wire gets grounded, or connected to 12V or ? to signal it it's in neutral/clutch pushed in.

Seems like it ties in with the starter control circuit at some point, which I haven't been able to make any sense of yet.

Edit:
Maybe it sees it's ground through the starter relay's coil? Then when you push the clutch in, it leaves this circuit "floating" (disconnected from the starter relay coil) which is how the module determines if the clutch is in?

Something I just thought of.

It's a double redundant switch for the starting system. Pushing the clutch in tells the pcm it's in neutral and then and only then will it allow 12V to flow to the starter, but none actually flows to the starter until you turn the key obviously. The two circuits are separate I think, but they are part of the starting system as a whole. The middle man is the pcm connecting the low current signal circuits and the high current circuits that send power to the starter. I haven't looked at my diagrams in quite some time so don't take my word as 100% accurate. But this seems to be what I remember...

As for where the wires go to engage/disengage 4X4, I believe they go through the GEM module (under the dash?). I don't think the pcm ever even knows or needs to know the truck is in 4x4 or not (that is, unless you have a Ranger that gets its speed info from the T-case, in which case I am not sure). At least for a manual transmission application, simply because the shifting points are determined solely by the driver. I'm only 70% positive about this...
