I just got a 93 4.0 ranger and it is in kinda rough shape. I am in the process of pulling the engine and I'm gonna do a lot of work on that.
The guy I bought it from said it was running a little rough, so he changed the upper and lower intake gaskets. He did not have the one of the injectors seated properly so it caught on fire. It only burned up a few vacuum hoses though.
I don't know what it runs like, but someone that had it before me cut both the exhaust pipes, before the catalytic converters but after the o2 sensors. There are two o2 sensors, one on each exhaust pipe coming from the engine, but they are both before the cats.
I will probably replace the sensors and the cats, but i was wondering, if the sensors are good should it run fine even with the cats cut out, since the senors are before the converter? Since i was not the one to take it apart and don't know what it ran like before, i will have to narrow down problems, if there are any once i get it rebuilt and put back together. I am gonna want to test it before i put all this money into a new exhaust because they used a torch, now the exhaust system is pretty much non-existant.
From what I have read in 94 they changed up the engine and the o2 sensors on 94 and newer will throw a code if the cat is removed.
Any thoughts or help will be appreciated.
