hey guys please help i just bought a 93 ranger with 89k on it drives great but today driving it sputtered and wouldnt rev up. than died i got it runnin snd idled it home. it wont rev up fast like 1500 rpm. sounds like its missing and some times itll pop when u give more throttle. souds like a timing issue? i put a new cap and rotor on it cause they were defiinitely due. didnt change anything. i can hear the fuel pump.... atleast thats waht i think that is. i just changed the fuel filter thinking it may be clogged. still no change. i did turn the key on with one of the fuel lines off the filter to make sure the pump is running. and it did pump a steady stream out but not sure how much pressure it should have? oush in the shradder valve on furl rail and has lots of pressure. please help me this is my daily driver and i dont have anything else.

ok so i dont have a fuel pressure tester. but it has pressure while it is off. another thing i checked is i sprayed starting fluid down the airbox and started it. it fires up crisp and revs up just like normal. no popping studder or bog. than after a few seconds of running it burns all the starting fluid and goes bag to the bog than dies so it would have to be fuel related right? i pulled the line off of the fuel pressure regulator and it is dry, so that means it is good right? i read in another thread that if its wet its bad. please help

unplug the MAF sensor, then try to start it

as Brutus t hog suggested you can disconnect the maf= mass air flow sensor and lets us know how it runs. it is located between the air filter and the throttle body in the air intake. as a maintance item it should be cleaned with maf cleaner. DO YOU HAVE AN AFTERMARKET AIR INTAKE LIKE A K&N AIRFILTER it could be the maf but i am leaning toward fuel pressure because it ran better with the starter fluid. also make sure that the air intake duct and the air filter are clean and not clogged up with leaves, etc.

no fuel in the vacuum line means the regulator is probably ok. you should do a pressure test, koeo, koer, and you want to see how much the pressure drops in 5 minutes after the truck is shut off.

You definitly have good gas in it right?. Don't add to much gas to it in case you have to change the fuel pump. some people pull the bed off the truck instead of dropping the tank. A heads up just in case. you will need a torx 55 for a ratchet to remove the bed

yea sounds like bad gas, or, i thought the 3.0s were all mas. but it is one of them if they cant see what is coming into the engine how can the compensate with fuel

I looked the MAF up on rockauto. I did not know that the 93's had a maf but it appears they do. I have a question. the trucks seems to run better on starter fluid. doesn't that mean that if it was the MAF that it would run lousy on the starter fluid also.

*one more thing is your CEL=check engine light on. Does it come on when you put the key in the run postion. If you dont know how you are going to have to learn to "pull" codes from your OBD-I diagnostic system. here is a link that will show you how to do it. http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/OBD_I.html

starter fluid from what i have found makes everything run awesome, i got my 81 chevette to run on it and nothing else so you can see where it comes from but otherwise, it might be the IAC if it doesn't even run at idle. and i have no idea about the CEL sorry

the IAC= idle air control valve could be a suspect. on some trucks the IAC is called the air bypass valve. you could pull the IAC off and clean it out!! Cleaning the MAF and the IAC are maintenance issues that need to be done anyways

Thanks for noticing the obvious.

The 3L is still a simple internal combustion engine. It just happens to have sensors and emissions systems in it. Don't be fooled by it all.

My guess is fuel. I can only guess, since I am not there and I cannot test personally.

It would make sense that since it'll run off stater fluid, but not on it's own, would mean it's not recieving enough fuel to the cylinders. A fuel pressure check would be critical to the diagnosis. Pressure isn't everything though.....volume of fuel is essential too.

Do one more check, see if you can keep it running for a while with the starter fluid. Not just start it.

could be a very weak spark starting fluid lights a little better than gas pull a plug out and set it on the intake and turn it over to see how good of a spark it puts out

Who and what were you talking about........it always shows more courage to actually confront the person you were backstabbing.......peckerhead.......

some people on here are novices and need some explanation.......let me guess you are a self proclaimed genius and were born with all this knowledge.......good job screwing up a thread........you're great at it

he didn't ruin the thread. relax. and hes talking to EVERYONE above i believe. All hes saying is that engines are ALOT simpler than people make them out to be. all engines need 3 things to run, Compression, Fuel/Air, and a spark. Missing one of the 3 and it won't run, It runs on starter fluid so that rules out compression and spark, whats left? the Fuel/Air. My diagnosis, Fuel pump not putting out the right volume. Change your fuel filter and report back.

the Op on post #1 said he changed the fuel filter. We all agree he needs to do a fuel pressure test but I have a feeling the OP is a novice, at least with Rangers, so we were doing the Kindergarten thing.....wasn't that "obvious"
