Hi...I have a 93 Ford Explorer Limited with 180,000...had usual suspension and window probs, but basically good truck. All of a sudden yesterday I started it up and smelled smoke...then smoke started coming out of AC vents...very toxic smelling...not like coolant? Shut down heater and fan and seemed to go away...not sure what it could be...any ideas? Thanx Unc

Toxic, not like coolant? :puzzled: Sounds like a leaking heater core to me. Any noise accompany the smoke? Could be blower motor going. Did you try turning back on to see if it continued?

It could be a leak in the A/C evaporator. You would be smelling the freon and refrigerant oil.

If refridgerant was leaking, it would continue to until system empty. Was stated that it stopped when he turned heater and fan off. Plus the only way refridgerant gets a toxic smell is if it is on fire and that smell is bad enough it would burn your nose hairs and could kill you from lack of O2 more quickly than hot coolant toxin's can.
