'93 Explorer: A4LD to FM146 swap?

Wondering if a '88-91 2.9L Bronco II FM146 will fit directly into a '93 4.0L Explorer?

If not, what's needed to complete the swap?

Have:
- 4.0L flywheel
- 4.0L clutch and pressure plate
- '88-92 2.9L Bronco II FM146
- stock '93 Explorer transfer case
- pedal cluster from donor B2
- 4.0L master cylinder

Please let me know ASAP, trying to the swap tomorrow (8/5/11).
 
Yes. It will fit. Pretty sure you need the pedals from an explorer and Different starter IIRC.

Going to need the flex plate too.
 
Longer driveshaft, and start lookin for a M5OD. Cause you will tear that tranny up with the 4.0. Depending how rough you are determines sooner or later.
 
why would you need longer driveshafts. the m5od, a4ld and fm146 are all the same lengths. I think you are thinking of a fm145.
 
if the fm145 is shorter then this is a fm145 not a fm146. this tranny seems to be 3inches shorter. i think im just going to go back to the junkyard and pull a m5od. id rather not do 2 tranny swaps. haha

so no matter what ill need the starter? i cant just use the auto one? ohh no unless the starter is from a 4.0 stick huh?
i already have all the pedals from a b2, do i need them to be from an explorer? or could i make it work? they appear to be the same. but if not no worries ill grab some new ones.

lucky for me the picknpull has a 30day exchange time. so i can go in and pull another for free and just swap them.

Grab the starter from the M5OD, that will be the one you need. And you will need the pedal assembly from an explorer or similar year ranger. FYI the B2 was only made til 90, when the explorer took over in 91...

If you find a late 90 B2 with a M code it'll have the M5OD in it. It'll have a better first gear in it. Good luck w the swap
 
ok gunna sound dumb as **** here, but gotta ask, m code? as in vin, or on the door where it says what the rear axle gearing is?
 
there are many ways you can do this, if u decide to run the 146 you will be pleasantly suprised as you will have a gearing benifit most people neglect to think about, the 146 and m50d arent really any difference in strength wise, i see just as many failures of the m50d as 145-146 and tk5s. ive run pretty much every transmission behind every RBV engine succesfully, infact my friend is probably going to be selling his 146 swapped explorer here shortly, hes been drivin it for about 8 months like this with 33s on it with no sign of wear, and he drives his explorer like a sports car...

now im sure im going to have alot of people up in arms.....but most of those people have never done it, and are just BAAAAAing along like sheep, id do the 146, will save u some dough on gearing for the time being.....
 
I would put a fm146 in if I already had one. No reason to spend money when you have what you need right in front of you.
 
well turns out i have the fm145. however found a fm146 at pick an pull and since it looks the same they said i can just swap them. idk why looks matter? haha but im going back today to finish pulling it. thanks for the help guys!

another 6 hrs today. sooooo close! the damn exhaust is in the way but i can pull it, its too rusty. going back tomorrow and try and cut through it. otherwise im good. oh and the pedals. the 91 ranger im getting the tranny from has a different pedal cluster, so i gotta find one of those tomorrow.
 
I'm in love with M5OD/4.0 in my Explorer. I will also state that my TK4 wouldn't die no matter what I did to it behind my 2.8. I think with proper care, and gentle driving, you could get by on an FM 145/46 as long as necessary.
