i found a set of 93 cobra heads off a wrecked mustang and was wondering if they would work on my mid 80's 302...i got a procomp alum. intake that fits my old stock heads ..i can buy the croba heads cheap if i can use them on my older 302 with the intake i have and a 1406 carb

They should be GT40 heads, no issues.
I believe some 80's 302 had flat top pistons, so you may want to check piston-to-valve clearance if using a non-stock cam. HO engines from '87-up had notched pistons.

Your accessories will bolt up fine. The 93 Cobra used GT40 heads, the same heads used on early v8 Explorers.

I was told that I was pretty much stuck with the E6's unless I wanted to change the pistons to some with valve reliefs. The E6's have deeper chambers to counteract not having valve reliefs in the pistons.

Otherwise I would have stuck on the E7's I have on the bench and currently have no future... :annoyed:

the heads that i got on the truck now are a d80e..im guessing there junk heads but i was told with that cam im wanting to use along with the alum procomp intake duel plain that it would help the hp and torqe alot better than what i have now..

Those heads will work fine with the cam you want to use, but is you'r block a roller block? If it is a roller cam would be better to use than that howards flat tappet cam.

my best advice it to roll the engine over by hand first with a torque wrench then swap the heads. try the same proceedure after the installation and if it feels like the valves are contacting then you need to swap the cam or get pistons with reliefs for the valves.

The 93 Cobra heads got an extra milling pass before assembly to raise the comp ratio, so no, they're not exactly the same heads the Explorers got later. hddave1: if your pistons have no valve reliefs, you're pretty much saddled with any of the stock cams or the B303, but after assembly, the valve clearance still needs to be checked.

well the pistons that are in my engine look to me like they have the reliefs made in them.. but if any one has a pic that can show me what the pistons should look like i'll know if i got the right pistons

I didnt think it was enough of a difference to say, but your right. Stock gt40 heads are 65cc and cobra heads are 62.5cc.

here is a pic of what the pistons in my engine look like...is this the pistons i need to be able to run the 93 gt40 cobra heads with the howard cam

Those little dents in the face of the pistons are valve reliefs.

A flattop doesn't have them, the face of the piston is flat... hence the name. :icon_thumby:

You know I really did look at that listing of the cam but looked at the lift and duration and completly missed the Very important fact that that was a flat tappet cam - Duh! Good price for it anyway.
