Hey all.

This is probably a stupid question, but I'm new to the world of Rangers and auto mechanics in general. But, trying my best to learn.

This is actually a question on behalf of a friend, but I hadn't the foggiest what the answer is.

He has a '93 Ranger with a 4.0 married to an automatic transmission. The engine is good, rest of the truck is kinda hashed. I found a '92 Ranger that's manual, but missing the engine. Everything else is there.

My question is, will the 4.0 from the automatic swap into the manual body? Or are there adapters and stuff that we would need?

Thanks.

The 4.0 will swap pretty easily. There is a bushing/bearing in the end of the crank that is used with a manual trans. You need to swap that over or get a new one. It would be really handy if the original 92 engine wiring harness was in the 92. The harnesses are different between the years mainly because the engine computer was moved from the passenger side inside the cab to the drivers side outside the cab [and a bitch to get at].
That's all I can think of at the moment.

What engine did the 92 have originally? That will be a big part of how easy this is.

If the 92 had a 2.9 or a 4.0 the 93 4.0 will go right in. If it had any other engine the trans will not match up. If it had anything but a 4.0 there is wiring that will need dealt with.

Thanks for the help, it's really appreciated.

I'm not sure if the original harness is still in it, though the guy I talked to said that "all it needs" is an engine. So, it might be in there or it might not. The truck is a couple hours away, so we'll most likely bring a trailer and plan to pick it up even if some parts are missing.

Are these the bearings that would be needed? The guy doesn't have the original 4.0l from it at all so we can't get any parts from that: http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...sion-manual,manual+transmission+bearing,14202

Right, sorry I forgot to put that in the post last night. The '92 had a 4.0 originally, and we'd be dropping a 4.0 in. So, sounds like then it should go in pretty nicely. Thanks for the info, it helps a lot.

Thanks again for the help, guys.
