Here's a breakdown:

1. Installed a new long block.
2. Aligned notch on distributor with notch on block.
3. Aligned pulley to TDC 0. Rotor pointing at the notches in distrib and block.
4. New plugs, wires, coil, cap and rotor.
5. Getting spark to the plugs.
6. Getting fuel.

Engine turns over fine. Every few cranks, there is a blow back from the intake into the air intake tube. Engine will not start.

Any ideas?

Take the number 1 plug out and put it back into it's wire. Lay it against the block, and put your finger in the open sparkplug hole. Then have someone bump it around and watch the plug fire as you feel for compression. The plug should fire just before the compression shoves your finger out of the hole. The air will be hot and might scare you the first time, and the test is crude- but if the ignition timing is way off you'll know for sure.

I haven't worked on any of these engines or I could tell you more specifically how to set it up. On the older stuff you lined up the timing chain marks, then bumped the engine up on TDC with your finger in the n0.1 hole to ensure it was on the compression stroke- then moved the rotor over to no.1 and dropped the dist in. I'm assuming there is no moving distributor on this engine so I am a bit lost on how to set it up- but I'm sure your problem is either:

1.timing gears not lined up properly (probably not likely)
2.valves radically out of adjustment (not likely)
3.ignition firing at the wrong time (most likely)

Someone else on here can surely put you in the right direction that knows how to do it...

Edit: I suppose you could still be 180 degrees off if you just lined up the marks and put it together- If the test above shows it to be off, bump it around with No1 out and your finger in the hole to ensure you are on the compression stroke- then put it back in.

Putting your finger in the spark plug hole is crude..but it works!. Got the timing set and noticed the plug wires into the distributor were off by one. placed them in their proper place and the engine fired right up. Still ff about 10 degress, but a little tweaking took care of that. Eng9ne running smooth.

Now, I've noticed what sounds like a valve clicking. Can the valves on a 93 V6 3.0 be adjusted? When I received the long block all of the valve bolts were tight. Not sure what to do to correct the clicking. Any assistance is greatly apprecia:yahoo:ted.

Not sure if U can or not- I'm not at home so I can't check my book. Glad U got it running!! Good deal!

you cannot adjust the valves. ticking is most likely a stuck/collapsed lifter (provided its valve ticking your hearing).

First, let's look at the obvious: the battery. When the battery is run down, but the headlights seem to shine at full strength, usually the starter makes click-click-click noises. That usually means you need a jump start. Of course, if the headlights are dim or off entirely, the battery is the most likely candidate.

Im pretty sure he is talking about a lifter noise cause he obviously got it started.
nope not adjustable. sounds like it just needs to run a bit to pump up the lifter. If it doesnt work out in maybe 20 min of ideling in park then your going to have to tear into it and replace a lifter.
