I have a 1993 Ranger 2.3 l. ( I know it's a dog), I heard that the engine and tranny are unique, as since this is a 4x4 with a manual 5 speed they will only mate to each other. So can the 2.3 be replaced with something with more guts? or what mods can I do to give the 4 banger more power?
i.e. different head?, cam?
Thanks in advance.

a 2.3 is a 2.3. the 2.3 4x4 trans is a bit rare, but its not anything special.

a 2.3 turbo is the only cost effective "mod" for that engine.

That would be awesome to have a 4x4 2.3T. There's a good chance you have the D35/28 hybrid TTB. They are kind of weak. For a 2.3L its sufficient but a turbo might stretch its limits. There are a few things you can do but it won't give you a "wow" increase in power. Since you have a low power engine turning a lot of drivetrain, you might benefit from switching your engine, trans, transfer case, and axles over to synthetic fluid. Step up to a numerically higher ring and pinion ratio will help but be kind of expensive if you have a shop do it. A cam will raise your powerband and would be fine for a lightweight 2wd ranger or better yet a small car. But you don't have a lot of torque so I wouldn't sacrifice too much of it for a little hp on top.
