I paid 300$ for my 92 nissan sentra a year ago. It has ran amazingly, and i have probably put 1k$ into it, which i am not too worried about. Currently it has a starting issue, and the nissan forum is small for this year so i have resorted here while i await my ranger. When i go to start it, my starter either grinds the flywheel or locks up. I have tried some washers on the starter bolts, but that does not work. So can it be saved without putting a ton of money into it?

I will upload a video here in a moment, as its still uploading to the computer.

The starter has been tested and everything works fine on it..should i get it replaced under the warranty anyways? Whats the flexplate?

Oh, okay..i have a manual, i figured it was the flywheel. Looks like this thing will be going to the junkyard if it needs a flywheel.

I live in the city and my car barely fits in the garage. The car is getting sold if i fix it or not..so i am not going to put that much money into it to get 500 max out of it.

Video is up for a more clear explanation.

Your starter may be electrically fine. Bu the pinion in the starter is sticking while installed. I would put a new/used starter in anyways and just double check. You can also get a chainsaw file and make sure the edges of the teeth on your flywheel are looking right and not excessively wore down.

You could also simply be missing teeth on the flywheel. It happens. and missing teeth are not the end of the world.

Its a manual? Roll it a foot while in gear. If it has missing or buggered up teeth that will rotate unbroken teeth for the starter to grab.

You can remove the starter and look in at the teeth on the flywheel and verufy if they are torn up or not. Usually they lose a tooth ot two, not all of them at once. If it grinds like hell in any position I would suspect the starter.

my buddy rear ended a sentra in his pos tacoma, totaled the sentra, broke his licence plate frame. lol he also hit an elk with the same tacoma, the elk shat on the truck when he hit it. haha then some lady rear ended him. hes had the truck for less than a year. i know that was off topic but sentra talk made me think of it!

Will teeth actually be missing? They are worn and show bare/worn metal, but none of the teeth (flywheel or starter) are actually missing.

Ill try rolling the car up some and see if the starter catches or not. If i can't get this thing started without doing too much work to it, ill just take her to the junk yard.. i only paid 300 for it, so no huge loss :D

They may be gone or not, you kinda have to make a judgment call- if they look worn down enough to start slipping and grinding than that is likely the problem. Some wear on the outside edge where the bendix gear slams into the flywheel teeth is normal- but if worn across the front of the teeth surface than that is likely the problem.

My Ranger did that, neither the ring gear or starter really looked terrible. A reman starter cured it.
