2.3l (whopping 140CID, yeah!) From the start, not warming up. Temp gauge came up to two needle widths off the normal line, piss warm on the vents.

I figured no stat, low stat, or stuck open stat, so I replaced it today.

Was a 195, is now a 180, with a corresponding lessening of temp.

I've been dealing with cars for near 40 years, but these Mazda engines are rather new to me.

Maybe something is missing in the stat housing and the coolant is washing by?

Maybe go back to the proper temp T stat?

A higher temp T-stat in cold climates is better than a lower one from my experience. But if you are experiencing low heat from the heater then it is probably an air pocket in the system that needs to be burped.

To do that, start with the engine cold and take the rad cap off. Run the engine with the cap off for about 5 to 7 minutes and you should see the coolant start to move. This also calls for turning on the heater blower and setting the temp to high.

Once the coolant is moving it should actually drop when the air pocket is pushed out. Top up the fluid and cap it and check the heat on the inside. It should now be fairly hot.

If not, you may have a problem with gunk in the system and it should be flushed if you haven't already done that.

It may also be a good time to refresh the coolant with new stuff and to check that it is the proper mix. Too much anti freeze may cause the temp to stay low...and not enough will cause other problems...I like to mix mine to about -45.

Are you sure that the heater core is partially clogged up? Had the same problem on a Mustang II years back and actually had to change the heater core to get any heat out of it.
