'92 Ranger - pre-purchase advice & what to watch for...

Hello,

I'm considering buying the '92 Ranger in the link below:

http://www.ksl.com/auto/listing/763083?ad_cid=12

I would like some advice regarding what to look for during the pre-purchase inspection and test drive. I owned an '88 Ranger several years ago, and I've wanted another early Ranger since the day I sold it.

The ad shows it's got a 4.0L engine, which I'm not familiar with.

Any tips or pointers about specific things to check for this particular vehicle would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Also, I'd like opinions on the seller's asking price. Does it seem reasonable if everything checks out? Thanks!

Looks like a reasonable deal to me if everything checks out. I would look to see what kind of quality there is in the workmanship for the custom work. Depending on the quality of the work you could have problems down the road with what was done to it. That would be my biggest concern along with the overall condition of the engine and transmission.

The 4.0 is a good engine. Having grown up in Bountiful and driven a lot in the Salt Lake area, I say check the undercarriage thoroughly for rust. If by some miracle it isn't in the late stages of rusting out, be sure to treat everything with POR-15 or similar before it gets cancer.

Check the gear ratio too, it may be a bit of a gas hog in the city if you're running those 33s on 3.08s... Other than that it seems like a fair price as long as it's all there and in sound condition. I may be biased but I think a '92 with a 4.0 is one of the best Rangers you can get.

92s have crappy doors.

Thanks for the info guys. I contacted the seller, and he said it's been sold. From the sound of it, I might have dodged a bullet. He wasn't the one who did the custom work, nor was any of the 3 previous owners! He says he was the 7th owner, and only had the truck for a short period of time. That sounded too fishy to me.

Anyway, now I've got my eye on an immaculate '87 long-bed 4x4 at a more practical ride height (factory) for about the same price. I'll see how it goes.

Thanks again.
