Swap out steering column.
Richard
I agree buy a steering column from a junkyard that has a key.
1989-90 bronco2
1991-94 Explorer
1989-94 Ranger
ALL use the same exact column.
IF you don't already have a Tilt-column now would be
the time to upgrade to one.
If you really don't have time to get a column...
Remove the plastic shroud from the column (phillips screws from underneath)
Then look at the underside of the column.
There is an approx 3/16" diameter hole and up inside it you'll see a steel pin.
This is the "point of no return" because if you take the next step you are committed.
With a pin punch drive that pin into the lock cylinder.
this pin normally is "released" with the key in the "on" position,
but driving it in with the cylinder in the locked position will permanantly jam the cylinder.
The next part is pry the lock cylinder out to do this requires breaking a 1/4" diameter
stem inside the cylinder, so quite often it isn't exactly easy...
What I generally do at this point is to break-off the chromed finger piece
and run a 3/8" drillbit axially down the center of the lock cylinder until it practically falls out
When you finally get it out what you'll see is a metal plate retained by a circlip
That plate has a rectangular cutout in the middle the broken off or drilled off tab
that was part of the cylinder a few minutes before is now behind that plate
using a small screwdriver with a long shank you can not turn it clockwise one "click"
(from Lock to OFF) and at this point the broken chunk can be removed
What you'll see at this point is as far as you'll probably need to go...
You'll see a brass sector gear (you won't see that it's a gear unless you
remove the circlip and the plate which you really don't need to do)
That Sector gear moves a linear rack gear which works a push-pull rod
that works the lock cylinder which is back under the dash
(getting to the switch won't help you now, because until that sector gear
rotates and the rack gear moves the steering column will be locked.)
I hope this lengthy explanation helps.
If not you send me round trip gas money and I'll drive out and help you...
I'm only 2900miles away...
