92 F150 question(s)

My neighbor bought his 17 yr old kid a pretty decent 92 F150 for like 1200bucks. Its a 302/E4OD/2wd reg cab long box.

Anyways....someone grenaded the driveshaft in it (why it got sold, twisted it right off in the middle....guy claimed it "rusted and broke"...yeah right)

Anyways....they put a driveshaft in it and it does move and shift through the gears.....but it shifts firm. The speedo also doesnt work and rear ABS is on.

I crawled under it found the pigtail to the speed sensor totally gone. So i fixed that for them and tossed a speed sensor in it. Still same thing.

I find it weird it shifts still with no speedo....my 97 didnt when the sensor went. Truck only has 130k so i dont think the tone ring would be bad.

The speedo does "come to life" when you turn the key on so i dont think the Speedo itself is bad. I didnt dig to far into wiring but it seemed ok besides the pigtail.

Any ideas?

Wiring could be damaged elsewhere when the pigtail was pulled on.

Do they have sensors in both the trans/tcase and rear axle?

Is there a speed sensor on the transmission? Sometimes, way back then, the one on the diff was for RABS only.

That i dont know. I figured it just had the rear axle one. Ill have to look into that.

When i get back over there ill check the wiring further up. Besides the pigtail back where i spliced it seemed ok. It looked like a mouse chewed the pigtail.

I do wonder now if that driveshaft maybe took some wires out, but all the taillights and stuff work

The body wiring would be along the frame, different harness.

So it could of possibly murdered some wiring in there. I know it did a number on the front fuel tank

One doesn't simply just accidentally twist up a driveshaft, especially with a stock 302.

Was we doing a brake stand or something? Something very well could be broken too.

Oh i know. I knew the story they were told was total bullshit.

It was leaking from the output seal but they changed that. Like i said it seems to function but the speedo dont work and it shifts firm...like its in limp mode. It does go into overdrive though and fluid is decent

I once twisted the end off a drive shaft on a 1 ton truck. It blew while I was revving the shit out of the motor going from gravel to pavement. I never did find the end, it must have shot out into the farmers field next to the road.

I did it on a semi at my old job.

They were yard trucks but still...we had a dump trailer they would WAY overload with reground block to dump back in the charge pit..(concrete block plant)....i was driving an old ford L9000 single axle with a worn out old 12.7 detroit and a 7speed. It didnt like 100k gross from a dead stop up a steep hill.

Twisted it right off before the rear yoke...rear yoke and u joint went flying 50 feet and hit a concrete safety block so hard it cracked it
