Recently my ex-girlfriend (b!+ch) purchaced a '91 Ranger, 2wd, reg. cab, 5speed, 4banger, base model for 400 dollars. Runs like a champ, gas gauge dont work, oil pressure a little high, rust, idles at 1,500, but otherwise...a nice truck.
Anyways, i guess she went to register it over at DMV and she could'nt because the previous owner screwed the title up. What happened was the person who bought the truck(the wife), and signed the title, has a different last name then the person (husband) who sold the truck to my ex.
and for some reason thats not kosher with the DMV.
(If this sounds confusing then im sorry)
So now the truck is just sitting on the side of the road somewhere, because my ex wants nothing to do with it.....and this is the good part.....I WANT IT FOR A DAILY DRIVER!!!!!

Anyone know how hard it would be to either straighten out this mess and/or get a new title??

talk to them at the dmv. theres usually a form you have to fill out to fix an error on the title. the PO of mu escort screwed up the title when i was buying it. he had to get this other form and fill it out, then i needed to take them both to get the new title done. theres a way to do it, like i said just call 'em up and ask.

wow...whodathunk it!?!?!

a tip...dont buy a vehicle unless the person listed on the title can sign it.

if the woman who sold it got it as a divorce settlement, she should have got her lazy ass up and took the decree to the dmv and got a title in her name.

or you could go to the seller, get them to make you a bill of sale, and then have them apply for a lost title (10-15 bucks).... in about a week, a new and clean title will come in the mail (to the seller)..... then, re-do it with the correct signature.....

Otherwise you have to go get it notarized...... if you know someone who is a notary, its not a big deal, just have them do it and you will be cool!

Speaking of titles, what does it mean when you have a "open title"? In Illinois you can get ticketed for it, but I am not sure what it means. Is that what funkingonutz has, a open title?

i think you are mistaken.... "open" or "clear" means the buyer has paid its original taxes and such.... and it is clean and able to be sold....

This is what I found on google regarding a open title:

An open title usually refers to a title that has been signed off by the owner, but not re-assigned to a new owner.

Open, in my mind, means that the previous owner (the one who sold to the guy) never signed the back of their title. If this is really the case:

1. The guy can never sell you a car until he registers it in his name first and gets his own title and plates.

2. He can't register an "open" title until he gets the previous owner's signature on the title.
