Put your finger in the bell housing viewport and feel around for brake fluid. A leaky slave might leak down to there, and is common on these trucks. Not changing the fluid is not nearly as bad as running out of fluid or using the wrong stuff. I beleive this tranny takes Mercon V with no friction modifier...dont quote me on that. Alan d can speak to the condition of a tranny after using the wrong lube better then i can.

It actually takes Mercon, but you can use synthetic Mercon V if you like.

Most likely the slave is on its way out. I would think about doing a whole clutch job while your in there if it has never been done before. Do it all once and forget about it...

it does take mercon, but i would actually spend the money on the Mercon V. i just switched from Mercon III, which i put in last year, to regular mercon, and the regular mercon actually runs hotter. i can feel alot more heat comin up through the shifter. the fluid is full...just my $.02...i'll be switching to mercon V tomorrow, due to me needing to haul a lot of hay with my truck.

If it has been run with gear oil for years, it's toast. Time for a new trans.

....theres no such thing as Mercon III.

Dexron and Mercon are two different fluids that had patents. They're now marketed together as Dexron III/Mercon. No Mercon III.

And yes, take the master cylinder off the firewall and tilt it upward and bleed it that way. This will ensure no air bubbles remain lodged in there.

i just wrote as it read on the bottle. second person to correct me on that...its not really that big of a deal.

If the fluid is brown change the fluid in the reservoir... bad fluid can break down and not give good pressure

That truck is old enough to have rubber plugs up in the shift rails. Those things were notorious for leaking the fluid out. I think it's been run low on fluid for several years and is toast. 19 year-old Mercon itself isn't all that bad. It sees much harder service in an auto and there are millions of 20 year-old autos running around that have never seen a fluid change.
