90 ranger 2.9 help

I have a 1990 ranger with the 2.9 2 wheel drive 5 speed, I'm looking for a little advice on. The truck had a small engine fire not much damage just plug wires and a crispy wire harness, what I would like to do since I'm making it a "fun truck" is put a nice carburetor on it and do a little beefing up it, however I have no clue where to get a intake manifold that will convert to a carb or what moter I could pull one off of. Next since this is one of my first project trucks I'm putting alot of time into it I would like to rewire it but I need some assistance on what needs to be hooked back up and what i can leave off. Any help is greatly appreciated!

and just why would you want carburetor over fuel injection? besides i don't think that the 2.9 ever had a carburetor..
 
The 2.9 never had a carb. Offenhauser did make an intake to put a carb on a 2.9, but they are very rare to come across these days and when you do they go for between $600-$1000. There are no other production engines that you can take an intake from to slap on a 2.9 and make it carb.

Also the 2.9 needs the computer to deal with the ignition. You can't just use a 2.8 dis because it spins the wrong direction and the gear won't mesh.


I'm with demon in my abject inability to understand why you could possibly want a carb over a proper fuel injection system. EFI delivers better fuel economy, power, performance, and consistency than a carb ever can on the same engine. A carb may be able to win in one or two of those areas at a time, but it will do it by sacrificing all the others. EFI is better able to function across the board.
 
Here in New Jersey the EPA rules don't allow any mods of this kind period!
Anyway I'm with the rest of you. I was ASE tech back in carb days. When fuel injection came out on American cars I said to myself " What took so long! "
 
I'd look into the cause of the engine fire....

My choptop had a small engine fire before I got it. A close inspection of things showed a large crack (I could stick my fingernail in it) over one cylinder in the head. Hot oil apparently shot out the crack and right onto the exhaust manifold, thus creating a fire.

I tried replacing the head only to have it crack again. Naturally I replaced the wiring harness when I did that (it really wasn't as bad to replace as you might think). The replacement head didn't fail as bad as the first, but it failed. I pulled the motor in favor of a junkyard 2.9L which ran great and gave me no problems at all until the point where I pulled it in favor of a 4.0L. Being that you have a 1990, it would be an easy conversion to 4.0L if you want more go.

If you really have your heart set on a carbed motor... do a carbed 5.0 swap....
