My dad picked up a 89 ranger, the guy said it was about a 93 or 94 mustang motor in it.

Issue started off as intermittently dying as he drove it, but was able to restart and get home from work. Did this 3-4 times one night on the freeway, then was fine for several days until it did it again and wouldn't restart right away (called me for a tow)

Now its gotten to the point it will start and die, you're lucky to even move the truck with its own power.

Fuel pump was recently changed in the last few oil changes, the crank position sensor was replaced (:icon_confused: really thought that was it!) Some times we could hear the fuel pump relay firing constantly running the fuel pump so we traded it for another one we had sitting around.

:dunno: What am I missing guys?

check to see if the fuel filter is collapsing under pressure.

I'd hope it isn't I remember pulling it off the frame when the old man was doing his fuel pump. I don't think I let him re-use it :icon_rofl:

Ok yes, fuel filter was changed in late august with the fuel pump. IIRC, he also said the fuel press at the rail was 35.

i would say ignition control Module

Help!!
New ignition module, fuel pump, crank sensor, plugs and wires.
Coil pack on intake side will not fire. Swap coil packs and it appears both coils will only fire from exhaust position. Checked wires from it module to coil pack. Have voltage and continuity on grounding poles. Wires appear fine.

only one side fires while cranking. does it run or no? also is the timing belt still in one piece?

Does not run at all now. Last time I seen the timing cover off it looked intact. I'll have to go look again to be 100% sure.

Yes only one coil pack fires, or rather one coil pack position since both work on passenger sides position.

ya, that's no problem. if theres fire in the cylinder, you don't have a spark problem. if you threw one coil pack in the trash the truck should still run.... start looking into the fuel system...

fire? yes
fuel? ??
compression??
air? probably....

figure out what's missing in the equation and then fix it!

good luck.

Did I read that right? Even if the coil pack is disconnected on intake side of head that will not cause any teal probs?
Sounds like I need to verify timing and see if fuel rail is pressurized like my dad claims?

As long as you have the one that fires while cranking plugged in it should run. So yes, start looking other places. A compression test wouldn't hurt either.

Heard the last part has it running for time being, needs to be test driven.

ECM? Main brains of the operation I guess is ECM.

Guess I should have come back and confirmed, the last thing changed before it stumbled to life again was the computer. Currently runs, but dad thinks its retarded 28° and I really didn't ask what the heck he meant. Told him I thought there's very little he can do about that.
