We have an 89 Ranger with 2.9L that won't start. A few days ago took it to the store about 5 miles ran fine, went to leave store and truck would not start, finally started but hard and ran badly all the way home. A few days later, reset the timing, just to be sure, cranked right up with no hesitation, idled high though, drove it around the block pulled up in the driveway, still idled high, shut it down and went to start it back up and it just turns over and won't start. Have plenty of spark and fuel!! We are at a loss!! Can someone send some suggestions our way?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!!!

If I were you, I'd start with easy stuff. Check to see if the Idle Air Control Valve is OK and also check to make sure the throttle position sensor is working ok. To be honest, it sounds like the idle air control valve isnt opening when you start it. Best way to find out is to remove it from the manifold and have someone turn the key on for you (not to start) you should see it move. its not much but its a start, you know?

Best bet though....check for codes.

Is the spark getting to the plugs??
this hints of a bad TFI or ignition module. If it restarts when cold...defiantly get it checked, most parts stores will check them.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, we thought it was the coolant temperature sensor, it turned out to be the plug going to it, the pin on the plug was pushed out and not making a connection!! It runs!!!! Thanks again, this is a great website!!!!
